Registered on the UNESCO world heritage list, Essaouira appears like a mirage suspended between sky and sea at the end of a long beach of very fine sand. Cosmopolitan and international city, already known under the Roman Empire for the extraction of the purple senators’ toga, Essaouira was conquered by the Muslims in the tenth century, invaded by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century, but they will remain there only 4 years, pushed back by the resistance of local populations.
The construction of the current city is due to Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah from 1760 and the remparts were built by a student of Vauban – Theodore Cornut – then prisoner of the Sultan. Charming and authentic place to visit in all seasons, the city is characterized by an exceptionally temperate climate that allows swimming even in winter ! Interesting Medina, made of narrow streets, blue doors and limed house, alternating with shops and craftsmen’s workshops – woodworking and marquetry in particular.
